Cling vs HoudahSpot

Updated 2026-08-05 · 5 min read

One of these makes Spotlight's index far more usable. The other stops relying on it. Those are answers to different complaints.

HoudahSpot: a better front end

HoudahSpot is the most capable Spotlight interface on the Mac. Compound criteria, saved templates, refinement, previews, results you can act on in bulk. If your complaint is that Spotlight's interface cannot express what you want to ask, HoudahSpot fixes it completely.

It searches Spotlight's index. Everything Spotlight knows, HoudahSpot can query more precisely — including file contents, because Spotlight's importers already extracted that text.

Cling: a different index

Cling does not use Spotlight at all. It builds its own filename index, including the places Spotlight excludes, and searches it with fuzzy matching in under 100 ms.

It does not search contents, and does not try to.

The diagnostic question

Ask which sentence describes your problem.

"I cannot express the search I want." HoudahSpot. Date ranges combined with kinds combined with folders combined with content phrases — that is precisely what it is for.

"The file is not in the results and I know it exists." Cling, or another indexer. The query language is not your problem; the index is.

Content search is the real divider

HoudahSpot searches contents because Spotlight does. Cling does not, by design.

If content search is why you are reading this, HoudahSpot is a serious answer, and so is Spotlight itself when it is working. Everywhere sits between: its own index like Cling, plus text extraction from PDFs and Office documents in folders you nominate — narrower than Spotlight's format coverage, but under your control and not dependent on an index that fails silently.

Price

HoudahSpot is around $34, Cling €12, Everywhere $19. All three are one-time purchases.

Common questions

Does HoudahSpot have its own index?

No. It is a query interface over Spotlight's index, which is why it can search contents but also why it inherits Spotlight's exclusions.

Can HoudahSpot find files Spotlight misses?

Not if Spotlight never indexed them. It can reach files Spotlight's own UI hides, but not files absent from the index.

Which is better for content search?

HoudahSpot, because Spotlight's importers cover far more formats than any third-party extractor ships with. Cling does not search contents at all.

Find any file before you finish typing

Everywhere keeps track of every file on your Mac — including the folders Spotlight hides and drives you have unplugged. Free for a day, then $19 once.
