Cling is good. It is also not the only tool that keeps its own index, and three of its constraints send people looking.

Why people look for an alternative

Three reasons, in the order they come up.

It needs macOS 14. Cling requires Sonoma or later. If your Mac stopped at Ventura — and the Macs most likely to be full of files are the older ones — Cling is not an option at all.

The free tier caps results. Free mode returns up to 500 matches, Pro up to 10,000. On a disk with millions of files, a broad query hits that ceiling quickly.

It searches names, not contents. Cling's own page says search is name-based rather than content or metadata driven. If what you remember is a sentence inside a document rather than its filename, no filename index will find it.

The distinction that matters is the second column. EasyFind and Find Any File walk the disk when you ask, which is why they need no index and why they take minutes on a large volume. Cling and Everywhere index in advance, which is why they answer in milliseconds and why they both need Full Disk Access.

If you want the closest thing to Cling

Everywhere is the nearest match in design: its own index, its own scanner, live updates through FSEvents, no dependence on Spotlight. It runs on Ventura, indexes external drives without a paid tier, and searches inside PDFs and Office documents in folders you choose.

It is also more expensive at $19 with a one-day trial, against Cling's €12 and fourteen days. If price is the deciding factor, that comparison is over and Cling wins it.

If you want free

EasyFind, and accept the wait. It scans rather than indexes, so a search over a large external drive is measured in minutes, but it is free, it has been maintained for years, and it finds things Spotlight will not.

The honest summary

If you are on Sonoma or later, do not need content search, and want to spend nothing: install Cling. It is the right answer for that set of requirements and no amount of writing changes it.
