Getting files back

The version history macOS already kept

Updated 2026-08-08 · 4 min read

You overwrote the good version an hour ago. For documents edited in Apple's own apps and many others, macOS has been keeping versions all along — behind a menu item few people have ever opened.

Browse All Versions

With the document open: File → Revert To → Browse All Versions…. The screen splits into a Time-Machine-style stack — current version left, history right. Page through the stack, then either Restore wholesale, or copy content out of an old version and Done back to the present.

Versions are saved automatically on edit sessions and on manual saves. The feature belongs to the document architecture, so it works in Pages, Numbers, Keynote, TextEdit, Preview, and any third-party app that adopted Apple's autosave — but not in apps with their own schemes (Word has AutoRecovery, browsers have nothing).

What it will not cover

the history with it. That case belongs to Trash and Time Machine.

The fallbacks, in order

  1. Undo — an app still open since the mistake may walk all the way back.
  2. Time Machine — enter it with the containing folder open; restores the

file as of each backup.

  1. Cloud version history — Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive all keep

30-plus days of per-file versions in their web interfaces; iCloud Drive keeps them for Pages/Numbers/Keynote via the same Browse All Versions screen.

The habit that replaces luck

For documents that matter, File → Duplicate before major surgery costs two keystrokes and beats every recovery mechanism by not needing one.

Common questions

Where are Mac file versions stored?

In a hidden per-volume store (.DocumentRevisions-V100) managed by macOS. It is not user-serviceable; the interface is Browse All Versions.

Does version history survive copying a file elsewhere?

No. Versions stay with the original volume's store. A copied or AirDropped file starts with no history.
