Most advice on this topic was written for spinning disks and is now wrong. Here is the current reality.

Try the routes that do not involve recovery software

1. Time Machine and local snapshots — the file at its old path, as of the last backup

or snapshot

1. Cloud copies — iCloud, Dropbox and OneDrive keep deleted files ~30 days server-side
2. The original source — email attachments can be re-saved, downloads re-downloaded,

photos may still be on the camera or phone

1. Copies elsewhere — earlier exports, duplicates on external drives. Searching every

volume for the filename, including unplugged drives, answers this in seconds

Why the internal SSD is usually a lost cause

Modern Macs TRIM freed blocks — the SSD erases them within seconds to keep writes fast. Recovery tools scan for orphaned data, and after TRIM there is none. On Apple Silicon, the internal storage is also encrypted at rest, which removes even the exotic options.

Anyone promising guaranteed recovery from a modern internal Mac SSD is selling something.

Where recovery software still works

• External spinning hard drives — no TRIM; deleted data persists until overwritten
• SD cards and USB sticks — usually no TRIM either; photo recovery genuinely works
• External SSDs — depends on the enclosure; TRIM over USB is inconsistent, so odds are fair

If you are going to attempt it: stop writing to that drive immediately, and recover onto a different disk.

The uncomfortable arithmetic

An afternoon of recovery attempts costs more than a decade of Time Machine drives. If this page found you too late for this file, let it at least trigger the backup.

Can files be recovered after emptying Trash on an M-series Mac?

From internal storage, effectively no — TRIM plus encryption at rest removes what recovery tools rely on. External drives and cards are still worth trying.

Does Disk Drill or similar work on Macs?

On external hard drives and memory cards, often. On the internal SSD of a modern Mac, expect little.
