Where apps hide your files

Locating WeChat's data on a Mac

Updated 2026-10-28 · 6 min read

WeChat for Mac keeps everything inside one sandbox container, but the layout inside it changed between versions. This post gives the container path, both known layouts, and a quick way to see which one your copy uses.

Start here

WeChat for Mac is sandboxed, so all of its data is inside one container in your Library:

~/Library/Containers/com.tencent.xinWeChat/

Where it sits inside that container depends on the version. WeChat 3 and earlier kept chat data and received files under:

~/Library/Containers/com.tencent.xinWeChat/Data/Library/Application Support/com.tencent.xinWeChat/

WeChat 4 uses a folder called xwechat_files under the container's Documents folder:

~/Library/Containers/com.tencent.xinWeChat/Data/Documents/xwechat_files/

Tencent does not publish either layout. Both paths come from users and forensic researchers who examined real installs, and independent reports agree on them, but treat them as strong leads and confirm on your own Mac with the commands below.

Check what your copy uses

These commands list folder names only and read nothing inside:

ls ~/Library/Containers | grep -i -E 'wechat|tencent'
ls ~/Library/Containers/com.tencent.xinWeChat/Data/Documents
ls ~/Library/Containers/com.tencent.xinWeChat/Data/Library/Application\ Support/com.tencent.xinWeChat

If xwechat_files appears in the second listing, you are on the newer layout. If the third shows folders with long hexadecimal names and a version number, you have the older one. After an upgrade both can be present. If the first command prints nothing, WeChat has not been set up under your user account.

To open the container in Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder (⇧⌘G) and paste the path, or in Terminal:

open ~/Library/Containers/com.tencent.xinWeChat/Data

What is in there

Each signed-in account gets its own subfolder, named with a long identifier rather than your name. Within an account you will typically find:

ItemWhat it is
A database folder (Message in older versions, reported as db_storage in WeChat 4)The chat databases. These are encrypted
Image, video and file foldersReceived photos, videos and documents, stored under internal names
Avatar and cache foldersProfile pictures and thumbnails

The other folder names inside an account change between versions, so go by what they hold. Do not copy or share the chat databases: they contain your messages, and nothing can be read from them directly anyway because they are encrypted.

Getting files out the supported way

Right-click a received file or photo in a chat window and look for the option to save it or show it in Finder; the wording differs between versions. Saving from the app lets you choose a folder, and the file keeps its proper name.

WeChat also has a backup and restore feature, reachable from its menus or settings, which backs up chat history from your phone to the Mac and restores it to a phone later. Use that to move history between devices rather than copying the container. A backup made this way is a WeChat-format archive that only WeChat can read.

Recent versions also show where WeChat keeps its files, with a button to change the location, in the storage part of Settings. The tab name is not the same in every release.

Space

Chat attachments accumulate over years, especially in groups that share videos, and the container can reach many gigabytes. To measure it without opening anything:

du -sh ~/Library/Containers/com.tencent.xinWeChat

WeChat's own storage settings offer cleanup for caches and received files. That is the safe way to reclaim space, because the app knows which files its database still points to. Moving files out of the data folder by hand breaks the link between a message and its attachment, and the message then shows a file that cannot be opened. If you do touch anything in Finder, quit WeChat first.

Users who upgraded to WeChat 4 report that the old layout's data stays behind beside xwechat_files, roughly doubling the space used, until it is cleared from WeChat's storage settings. Let WeChat remove it rather than deleting the old folder yourself.

Never delete the whole container to save space unless you accept signing out, losing local chat history that was not backed up, and downloading media again.

Moving to a new Mac

Install WeChat, sign in with the QR code from your phone, and use the in-app backup and restore to bring history back. Copying the container across is unreliable, because the sandbox ties it to the app and the databases are encrypted.

Version differences

WeChat has changed its storage layout between major releases, which is why the exact folder inside the container is hedged here. The container name, com.tencent.xinWeChat, is the constant, so start there whatever version you run. Apple silicon and Intel Macs use the same path.

Why Spotlight misses it

Containers sit inside ~/Library, which Spotlight does not show results from, and received files are stored under non-descriptive names. Files you saved on purpose, to Downloads or a folder you chose, are searchable normally.

Confirming which layout you have

Instead of the ls commands, you can type xwechat_files into Everywhere once it has Full Disk Access, which macOS requires before any app can look inside ~/Library/Containers: a match means you are on the newer layout, and ⌘↵ reveals it in Finder. Typing xinWeChat shows every WeChat folder on the Mac, container included. It matches names only, so it never opens the chat databases or finds text inside messages.

Common questions

Where does WeChat save files on Mac?

Inside ~/Library/Containers/com.tencent.xinWeChat. WeChat 3 and earlier use Data/Library/Application Support/com.tencent.xinWeChat, and WeChat 4 is reported to use Data/Documents/xwechat_files.

Can I read WeChat chats from the data folder?

No. The chat databases are encrypted and the folder is not a readable archive. Use WeChat's own backup and restore feature to move history.

Is it safe to delete the WeChat folder to free space?

Not the whole container: you would lose local history that is not backed up. Use WeChat's storage cleanup instead, and quit the app before touching files in Finder.

Why is the WeChat folder so big?

Received photos, videos and files from chats accumulate over time, and after an upgrade to WeChat 4 the old version's data can remain alongside the new. Check the total with du -sh on the container.
