Voice memos as files

Voice Memos are ordinary .m4a files in an extraordinary hiding place.

The location

On current macOS:

~/Library/Group Containers/group.com.apple.VoiceMemos.shared/Recordings

(Older versions used a container under ~/Library/Application Support; the Group Containers path is where recent systems keep it.)

The recordings are standard .m4a audio files. The names on disk are timestamps or UUIDs — the titles you see in the app live in a small database alongside, which is why searching for a memo's title as a filename fails.

Getting recordings out

From the app is the supported route: select a recording → File → Save or drag it straight from the list into a Finder window. Dragging preserves the memo's title as the filename, which the on-disk copies do not have.

For everything at once, select all (⌘A) and drag the lot into a folder.

Playing the raw files

The .m4a files open in QuickTime, Music or anything else. Copy them out rather than opening in place — the app maintains its database against that folder.

Watch the sync setting

With iCloud enabled for Voice Memos, deletions sync. And Voice Memos → Settings → Clear Deleted controls how long deleted recordings persist (default 30 days) — the app has its own Recently Deleted, independent of the Trash.

Why this matters

Interviews, lectures, song ideas, meetings — voice memos are some of the least replaceable files people have, stored where no backup habit or search tool sees them unless it covers ~/Library. Check that your backup includes it (Time Machine does) and drag anything irreplaceable out into your real files.
