EasyFind, twenty years on

EasyFind is free, two decades old, and still the tool Mac veterans reach for when Spotlight lies. It earns the loyalty — with one structural limitation that decides whether it fits your disk.

What it is

A free utility from DEVONtechnologies that searches by *walking the disk live* — no index, no database, no background agent. Every search reads the actual file system, right now.

That single design choice produces both everything good and everything slow about it.

What the no-index design buys

• Completeness. EasyFind sees what exists at this moment: hidden files,

package contents, folders Spotlight excludes. If it is on a mounted disk, EasyFind finds it — full stop.

• Zero footprint. Nothing indexes overnight; nothing occupies gigabytes;

nothing needs Full Disk Access explanations twice a year.

• Trustworthy negatives. "No results" means the file is not there — a

statement Spotlight cannot honestly make.

Plus genuinely good search options: Boolean operators, wildcards, filename versus content, case sensitivity — a more precise query language than Finder offers.

What it costs

Time, linearly with disk size. Walking half a million files takes a couple of minutes; a modern 4 TB photo-and-projects disk takes long enough that the search becomes an errand. And content search re-reads every candidate file on every query — thorough, and brutally slow at scale.

No index also means no memory: unplugged drives are invisible, and every search starts from zero.

The verdict by disk size

Under a few hundred thousand files, EasyFind is close to ideal, and the price is unbeatable. In the millions — the photographer with six external drives, the packrat 8 TB archive — live walking stops being viable, and an indexed tool (instant results, offline-drive memory, at the cost of maintaining an index) becomes the only workable shape. Both beat the default: Spotlight's problem was never speed, it was the files it declines to see.

Is EasyFind still maintained?

DEVONtechnologies keeps it compatible with current macOS, with a slow release cadence typical of a finished free utility.

EasyFind or Find Any File?

Both walk the disk live. FAF is faster on raw filename scans and paid; EasyFind adds content search and stays free. At large disk sizes the live-walk model itself is the limit either way.
