Deltarune's save folder on macOS

Updated 2026-10-28 · 5 min read

Deltarune keeps every chapter's saves in one hidden Library folder. Here is the path, what the filech names mean, and how to back up or replay a chapter without losing progress.

The location

Deltarune keeps its saves in this folder on a Mac:

~/Library/Application Support/com.tobyfox.deltarune/

The Deltarune Wiki gives this path for every PC version, and Steam's own cloud settings for the game point at the same folder on macOS. It covers every chapter, and the free Chapter 1&2 demo uses it too, so the full game picks up demo progress on a Mac without any copying. In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder (⇧⌘G), paste the path and press Return, or hold ⌥ while the Go menu is open and choose Library. From Terminal:

open ~/Library/Application\ Support/com.tobyfox.deltarune

To list it without opening anything:

ls -la ~/Library/Application\ Support/com.tobyfox.deltarune

If the folder does not exist, the game has not saved on this account. Reach a SAVE point and look again.

How the save files are named

The wiki describes every file as filech<chapter>_<number>. The chapter comes first, then what the file is:

NameWhat it is
filech2_0, filech2_1, filech2_2SAVE files for Chapter 2's three slots, written at SAVE points
filech2_3, filech2_4, filech2_5Completion FILEs for slots one, two and three, created when you finish the chapter in that slot
filech2_9The file loaded when you continue after a Game Over, also used for hidden autosaves
dr.iniA file of flags the game shares across slots, per the wiki; leave it with the rest

Swap the chapter number for the others. Later chapters can add files of their own (the wiki lists extra _b files for one chapter's alternative ending), so copy the whole folder rather than picking files.

Completion FILEs are what a new chapter reads when you choose to continue from the previous one, carrying your items, money and choices forward. The wiki notes they are separate from SAVE files and are not deleted when you erase the matching SAVE.

Which slot is which

The Chapter Select and file select screens show each slot's progress, including whether a chapter is complete. On disk the files have only numbers, so load a slot in the game, or compare modified dates in Finder, to tell them apart.

Back up before you experiment

Quit Deltarune first so nothing is written mid-copy. Then:

  1. Open the folder with the commands above.
  2. Go up one level to Application Support.
  3. Hold ⌥ and drag com.tobyfox.deltarune onto your Desktop, which copies instead of moving. Rename the copy with today's date.

To restore, quit the game, move the current folder somewhere safe instead of deleting it, and copy your backup back in under the original name.

Starting a chapter over

The supported way is in the game. Each chapter's file select screen has Copy and Erase: copy a slot to a spare one before you replay, or start the chapter in an empty slot so your old run stays intact. Erasing a SAVE leaves its Completion FILE in place, which is why later chapters can still continue from it.

If you clear files by hand instead, quit the game, back up the folder, and move rather than delete, so you can put them back. Moving only the three slot files is not a clean reset: the Completion FILEs and the _9 file stay behind, and a later chapter can still read them.

Moving to a new Mac

If you play through Steam, sign in on the new Mac, install the game and let Steam Cloud bring your progress down before you start it. Compare what arrives with your backup. Without Steam Cloud, install the game, start it once so it creates its folder, quit, and copy the contents of your backup into com.tobyfox.deltarune.

Steam Cloud and restored files

Steam syncs this whole folder for both the full game and the free demo, so a file you replace by hand can be overwritten when Steam syncs. To restore a backup without that happening:

  1. Quit Deltarune.
  2. In Steam, open the game's Properties and, under General, turn off Keep game's saves in the Steam Cloud.
  3. Restore the backup.
  4. Start the game and check the slot, then switch cloud saving back on.

If Steam shows a conflict, it asks whether to keep the Local Save or the Cloud Save. Pick the one you just checked.

Why searching for it misses

~/Library is left out of Spotlight and Finder searches, and the files are named like filech2_0, nothing like the game's name.

Finding the folder again

Typing filech into Everywhere lists every Deltarune save and Completion FILE with its folder, and typing com.tobyfox shows both Toby Fox games' folders side by side. Application Support is scanned without extra permission. Press ⌘↵ on a result to reveal it in Finder. It searches names only, so it will not tell you which room a save is in.

Common questions

Where is the Deltarune save file on a Mac?

In ~/Library/Application Support/com.tobyfox.deltarune/, for every chapter and for the free demo. Save files are named like filech2_0, meaning Chapter 2, first slot.

What are filech_3, _4 and _5 in Deltarune?

They are Completion FILEs for slots one to three, created when you finish a chapter, per the Deltarune Wiki. The next chapter reads them when you continue, and erasing a SAVE does not remove them.

How do I back up Deltarune saves on Mac?

Quit the game and copy the whole com.tobyfox.deltarune folder to your Desktop or another drive. Restore it with the game closed and Steam Cloud paused for the game.

Why did my Deltarune save come back after I deleted it?

Steam Cloud syncs the whole save folder on a Mac. Turn off Keep game's saves in the Steam Cloud in the game's Steam Properties before you move or replace files.
