Cataloging drives and folders

Cataloging a video archive

Updated 2026-10-01 · 3 min read

Large video archives are exactly where a remembered file path saves the most time.

The useful distinction

Catalog a drive of camera originals, project exports, or client deliveries. Folder browsing shows the recorded hierarchy and sizes, while search finds names without mounting the disk. Catalog v1 does not generate thumbnails or search dialogue inside videos, so use a naming convention that carries project and date information.

A careful workflow

Open Catalog… from Everywhere’s menu bar item and add the drive or folder that matters. Let the first catalogue finish, then search by filename and browse the recorded folder tree. When the source is disconnected, the catalogue remains available and results are labelled offline so you know why opening the file requires reconnecting the drive.

Keep the original drive unchanged, use a clear catalogue name, and rescan after a large round of changes. Catalogues are for the places you choose; they do not silently turn a whole-Mac search into a second scan.

Common questions

Can Catalog preview offline video?

No. It can show the recorded path and metadata; playback requires the source drive.

Does cataloging a video drive take a copy of the footage?

No. Only the catalog records are kept locally.
