Cataloging drives and folders

What Catalog does not do yet

Updated 2026-10-01 · 3 min read

Knowing the limits is part of choosing the right workflow.

The useful distinction

Catalog v1 handles chosen local drives and folders, offline browsing, file metadata, export/import, and EFU import. It does not yet schedule network-share scans, index created/accessed dates and media properties, search inside offline file contents, or provide a separate cross-drive duplicate view. The core Find Copies workflow still reaches catalogs; the richer features are candidates for later versions.

A careful workflow

Open Catalog… from Everywhere’s menu bar item and add the drive or folder that matters. Let the first catalogue finish, then search by filename and browse the recorded folder tree. When the source is disconnected, the catalogue remains available and results are labelled offline so you know why opening the file requires reconnecting the drive.

Keep the original drive unchanged, use a clear catalogue name, and rescan after a large round of changes. Catalogues are for the places you choose; they do not silently turn a whole-Mac search into a second scan.

Common questions

Can Catalog index a NAS in v1?

No. Network-share scheduling is a later candidate.

Can it search text inside an offline PDF?

No. Content search inside catalogs is not part of v1.
