Cataloging drives and folders

Cataloging protected folders

Updated 2026-10-01 · 3 min read

Catalog does not bypass macOS privacy controls; it asks only when you choose a protected folder.

The useful distinction

Catalogs do not require Full Disk Access as a blanket feature. macOS may ask once when you explicitly add a protected folder such as Desktop, Documents, or Downloads. Approve only the folder and scope you intend to search, then verify that the catalog contains the expected files.

A careful workflow

Open Catalog… from Everywhere’s menu bar item and add the drive or folder that matters. Let the first catalogue finish, then search by filename and browse the recorded folder tree. When the source is disconnected, the catalogue remains available and results are labelled offline so you know why opening the file requires reconnecting the drive.

Keep the original drive unchanged, use a clear catalogue name, and rescan after a large round of changes. Catalogues are for the places you choose; they do not silently turn a whole-Mac search into a second scan.

Common questions

Does Catalog bypass macOS privacy?

No. It respects macOS prompts and requires permission for protected folders you explicitly add.

Can I remove access later?

Yes. Use macOS privacy settings or forget the folder catalog in Everywhere.

Find any file before you finish typing

Everywhere keeps track of every file on your Mac — including the folders Spotlight hides and drives you have unplugged. Free for a day, then $19 once.
