Cataloging drives and folders

Network drives and Catalog

Updated 2026-10-01 · 3 min read

Network shares are a different problem from removable archives, and Catalog v1 keeps that boundary clear.

The useful distinction

Catalog v1 is designed for chosen local folders and physical drives. Network volumes are not automatically cataloged, and the v1 design reserves network-share scheduling and live updates for a later version. If you need network search today, use the server’s own indexing tools or connect and work within the supported local scope rather than assuming a network folder is archived.

A careful workflow

Open Catalog… from Everywhere’s menu bar item and add the drive or folder that matters. Let the first catalogue finish, then search by filename and browse the recorded folder tree. When the source is disconnected, the catalogue remains available and results are labelled offline so you know why opening the file requires reconnecting the drive.

Keep the original drive unchanged, use a clear catalogue name, and rescan after a large round of changes. Catalogues are for the places you choose; they do not silently turn a whole-Mac search into a second scan.

Common questions

Will a NAS appear as an unknown drive prompt?

No. Network volumes are excluded from the automatic prompt.

Is network cataloging planned?

Rescan schedules and network-share support are candidates for v2, not promises of the current build.
