Cataloging drives and folders

Cataloging a music drive

Updated 2026-10-01 · 3 min read

You can remember where an album lives without keeping the whole music archive connected.

The useful distinction

Add the music drive or its archive folder to Catalog. Search by filename, artist folder, year folder, or the path convention you use. Catalog does not parse ID3 tags in v1, so a meaningful filename and stable folder structure matter more than metadata embedded inside an audio file.

A careful workflow

Open Catalog… from Everywhere’s menu bar item and add the drive or folder that matters. Let the first catalogue finish, then search by filename and browse the recorded folder tree. When the source is disconnected, the catalogue remains available and results are labelled offline so you know why opening the file requires reconnecting the drive.

Keep the original drive unchanged, use a clear catalogue name, and rescan after a large round of changes. Catalogues are for the places you choose; they do not silently turn a whole-Mac search into a second scan.

Common questions

Does this import music into Apple Music?

No. It records file and folder information only; it does not alter a music library.

Can I catalog a disconnected audio drive?

Yes, after creating the catalog while the drive is connected; later searches show its offline results.
