Cataloging drives and folders

Forgetting a catalog

Updated 2026-10-01 · 3 min read

Forget is a catalog-management operation, not a disk erase command.

The useful distinction

Use Forget when a catalog is obsolete, was created with the wrong scope, or no longer belongs on this Mac. It removes the catalog entry and its local index from Everywhere; it does not modify, format, or delete the source drive. If you need it later, add the drive or folder again and create a fresh scan.

A careful workflow

Open Catalog… from Everywhere’s menu bar item and add the drive or folder that matters. Let the first catalogue finish, then search by filename and browse the recorded folder tree. When the source is disconnected, the catalogue remains available and results are labelled offline so you know why opening the file requires reconnecting the drive.

Keep the original drive unchanged, use a clear catalogue name, and rescan after a large round of changes. Catalogues are for the places you choose; they do not silently turn a whole-Mac search into a second scan.

Common questions

Does Forget delete the source files?

No. It removes only Everywhere’s local catalog record.

Can I undo Forget?

There is no need to recover the source; reconnect it and add it again to build a new catalog.

Find any file before you finish typing

Everywhere keeps track of every file on your Mac — including the folders Spotlight hides and drives you have unplugged. Free for a day, then $19 once.
