Cataloging drives and folders

Cataloging footage across offline video drives

Updated 2026-10-01 · 3 min read

A searchable inventory is a fast first step before pulling a 12 TB drive from storage.

The useful distinction

Catalog each source drive and use project/date naming in folders. Search by clip name or project code, check the recorded size, and copy the path. When you connect the right drive, the same catalog becomes online and the path can be opened. Keep project databases and live editing volumes connected when an application needs them; Catalog is an inventory, not a media relinker.

A careful workflow

Open Catalog… from Everywhere’s menu bar item and add the drive or folder that matters. Let the first catalogue finish, then search by filename and browse the recorded folder tree. When the source is disconnected, the catalogue remains available and results are labelled offline so you know why opening the file requires reconnecting the drive.

Keep the original drive unchanged, use a clear catalogue name, and rescan after a large round of changes. Catalogues are for the places you choose; they do not silently turn a whole-Mac search into a second scan.

Common questions

Does Catalog generate video thumbnails?

No. It records file metadata and folder structure.

Can it replace a media-management app?

No. It helps locate files; it does not grade, transcode, or relink footage.
